Kathy Karr, principal flutist of the Louisville Orchestra since 1988, will give a recital on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall in Denkmann Memorial building (3520 7th Ave.). The free recital is part of Augustana’s Guest Artist Series and is open to the public.

Karr is looking forward to performing some of her favorite solo flute pieces, including a duet with Augustana’s flute instructor Janet Stodd. “I tried to include a variety of styles and periods of music in the program—everything from Baroque to contemporary,” she said. Stodd will join her to perform Allegro Vivace, a Kuhlau duet.

She teaches flute at the University of Louisville and Bellarmine Univeristy, both located in Louisville, KY, and performs around the world as a soloist and in ensembles. She regularly teaches master classes and performs recitals in the United States, Israel and Mexico, including past performances with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra of New York, the Sinfonica Da Mineria in Mexico City, the Evansville Philharmonic of Indiana and the Owensboro Symphony of Kentucky. This past spring, she performed in Carnegie Hall as a member of the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Players.

Karr loves performing for a variety of audiences. “Whether seniors citizens or children or college students, every audience brings a different energy and excitement to the performance,” she said. Karr enjoys ending her performances with a question and answer session, which gives her the opportunity to interact with the audience.

Sponsored by the Department of Music, the Guest Artist Series brings a variety of musical talents from regional, national and international locations to perform at Augustana. Guests have ranged from classical string players and contemporary vocalists to Indian raga players, native African drum and children's choir ensembles, and an Irish folk band. The series enhances the pedagogy of music at Augustana and provides unique cultural opportunities for the Quad City community.
