2011 IHSA Leadership Conference Slated For September 26 In Peoria
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) will hold its 2011 Leadership Conference on Monday, September 26 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria.
Current high school students, of any grade or age, at any IHSA member school are welcome to attend the free function by registering with the IHSA via an administrator, teacher or coach at their high school. The leadership conference is the first statewide conference of its kind held by the IHSA and expands on a model of several smaller leadership conferences that were put on at seven high schools throughout the state in the fall of 2008.
The 2011 IHSA Leadership Conference will feature keynote speaker Harvey Alston, a one-time high school football coach, who has gone on to become one of the most sought after motivational speakers in the country. The program will then feature sessions led by members of the 22-person IHSA Student Advisory Committee on topics ranging from sportsmanship, leadership, communication and rules.
“Not only will the conference have students leading the sessions, but nearly all of the content and subject matter has been created by students,” said IHSA Assistant Executive Director Beth Sauser. “We feel like the topics will relate well to current high school students and that it will be a positive atmosphere conducive to learning, discussion and sharing ideas.”
Conference registration begins at the Peoria Civic Center at 8:30 a.m. on September 26, with the conference set to kickoff at 9:30 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. The conference will also have adult sessions for the chaperones who accompany students in attendance.
“The IHSA Leadership Conference has been in the works for several years, so we are excited to see the hard work by so many individuals come to fruition,” said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. “We hope that our member schools will take advantage of this opportunity and bring several student leaders from their buildings to Peoria on September 26.”
