Two surgeons who grew up in Illinois will be expanding surgical services at Mercer County Hospital.

George Kontos, M.D., and Sara Glassgow, D.O., will offer their compassion and surgical skills to benefit patients of Mercer County Hospital beginning this spring.  Dr. Kontos and Dr. Glassgow presently are the surgeons at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus.  The surgeons also will continue surgery at Illini.

"It will be an honor for us to provide additional services that the community needs.  It will be a beneficial relationship for everyone,'' said Dr. Glassgow, who completed her surgical residency in 2010.

Dr. Kontos and Dr. Glassgow will be available for comprehensive surgical services, including gall bladder removal, hernia repair, colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, breast surgery, hemorrhoid surgery, stomach, colon and intestinal surgeries and general pediatric surgery.

Both surgeons are skilled in laparoscopic and minimally invasive approaches for common surgeries.

In their relatively short time at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, the surgeons have expanded the surgical program at the hospital.  The hospital has been able to expand its role in the health of the community because of the additional surgical services.

"I grew up in a small Illinois town and look forward to the opportunity at Mercer County Hospital.  Illini is a great community hospital with a family atmosphere. I know that we'll find the same atmosphere practicing at Mercer County Hospital,'' Dr. Glassgow said. "

Dr. Kontos received his first experience in health care working as a nursing assistant as a high school student in Chicago.  His mentors were doctors and nurses who encouraged him to learn more and to pursue a career as a physician.

Dr. Kontos has now gone from pupil to mentor for others.

Dr. Glassgow, an undergraduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, worked for the Association for Retarded Citizens in Rock Island before entering medical school at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in California.  She completed her surgical residency with the Kettering Health Network in Ohio.
