Area residents can safely dispose of old prescription and over-the-counter medications, inhalers and mercury thermometers during Aledo Antique Days, in Aledo Central Park (across the street from the county courthouse) Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Mercer County Health Department will be operating a booth for area residents during the event for the purpose of collecting unwanted medications and promoting safe and proper disposal of expired or unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

Before bringing medications to Aledo Antique Days empty pill containers into a zip lock bag; leave liquid medications in original containers; and package mercury thermometers to prevent breakage. All personal information should be either scratched out or covered with permanent marker. Business waste will not be accepted. The following items are unacceptable: needles or syringes; pet medications; controlled substances; IV bags; bloody or infectious wastes; personal care products; aerosol cans or radioactive wastes.

The unwanted medication collection is sponsored by the Mercer County Health Department and the Tri-County Resource & Waste Management Council (TCR&WMC). For more information, residents can call Mercer County Health Department at (309) 582-3759 or the TCR&WMC at (309) 837-3941.
