Jones wants conviction overturned

A Mercer County man serving 30 years in prison for setting his wife on fire wants his conviction overturned again.

In his petition for post conviction relief filed Monday in Mercer County Circuit Court, Kristopher Jones, 39, argues there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him at his trial.

Jones was found guilty of attempted murder and heinous battery in July 2005. The Sherrard man was accused of dousing his wife with gasoline and igniting her in June 2004. The burning occurred at an isolated farm near Sherrard. Tanya Jones nearly died from the incident. She suffered third degree burns to almost half of her body and was physically scarred from the crime.

A hearing date has not yet been scheduled for Jones’ latest petition. Jones had previously appealed his conviction with the Third District Appellate Court in Ottawa and that effort was denied with the decision upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court last April.

Jones was sentenced to 30 years in prison in October 2005. He is incarcerated in Menard Correctional Center.
