Woman electrocuted helping at crash scene
An Alexis woman was killed Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, after coming into contact with a downed power line. Mercer County Coroner Ron McNall said Patricia Higgins, 57, was attempting to help two teenage girls who were just involved in an accident.
Their car had left the roadway on 320th Street, about four miles east of Alexis. The car struck a power pole, causing downed wires.
McNall said Higgins came upon the scene a short time after the crash. She attempted to assist the two injured girls, but came into contact with the downed wires and was fatally injured.
The two teens were transported to Cottage Hospital in Galesburg for treatment of their injuries. Their names and conditions have not been released.
Alexis Fire, Alexis/North Henderson Ambulance, North Henderson Fire and Mercer County Sheriff's deputies responded to the accident, which occurred at 5:15 p.m.
