Cullen Welter met with his returning players Tuesday afternoon, March 10, 2009, and informed them he will not be the head football coach of the newly formed Mercer County Golden Eagles.

Welter, the Aledo High School head football coach for the past 11 years, has accepted the head football coaching position at Monticello High School in central Illinois pending school board approval.

In his 11 years as head coach the Green Dragons have been one of the state's elite small school programs. His squads have qualified 11 consecutive seasons for the IHSA Playoffs and have made five state title game appearances during his tenure, winning state titles in 1998, 2001 and 2002.

The 2002 team finished with a perfect 14-0 season. His overall record at Aledo was 113-21.
