Teachers and staff at Illinois City Grade School have a little girl, Alexis Bassett, on their minds and are in the process of gathering up items for a fund-raiser to help pay her medical bills. Alexis is a five-year-old girl who has been diagnosed with Brain Stem Glioma, an inoperable brain tumor.

She is the daughter of Delbert Bassett and Lindsey McGreer Bassett. Her grandparents are Brian and Tammy Van Blaricome McGreer.

The fund-raiser starts at noon on Saturday, March 21 at the Illinois City Community Center. There have already been a number of donations, but more are always welcome. Some of the raffle items are a flat screen T.V., a $250 Hy-Vee gift card and a whole hog.

There will also be a live auction, kids activities and a bake sale. Besides the auctions and raffles there will be a pulled pork lunch and dinner served for donations. Pulse Ox is playing music from 8 p.m to midnight for the fund-raiser.

The Alexis Bassett benefit committee has planned "An Anything" auction for Alexis. Suggestions include donating time for mowing yards or babysitting, for teens, to starting spring cleaning early and donating anything of value that is gently used (no clothing). Everyone is encouraged to drop off items at the Illinois City Grade School or call one of the organizers.

Contact Tammy McGreer (309) 537-3418, Chrissy Busard (309) 584-4865 or Wendy Fry (309) 791-0159, with questions or to donate. Donations can also be made at Central State Bank in Muscatine or 1st Community Bank in Aledo.

Alexis was diagnosed on Jan. 15, 2009. "She fell down and hit her face. Her balance started getting off and she started having some mood swings," said her mother Lindsey.

Lindsey works with sixth graders at Illinois City Grade School as a teacher's aide.

"We just found out she has kidney stones too," said Lindsey. I just hope it goes well, she said about the fund-raiser. While the family does have insurance, Alexis has been being treated at the Children's hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. That is outside of the network for their insurance.

"Her last day of radiation was Feb. 28. We're not sure what will happen next."

Lindsey is grateful for the support she has received from fellow employees. "They've done a wonderful job, they've been really supportive."

Alexis attends preschool at Happy Time in Muscatine, Iowa.
