Rock Island Alleman wins Mercer County sectional

Rock Island Alleman's Peter Callas shot a sectional best 72 Monday, Oct. 12, at Hawthorn Ridge golf course and led the team to a first place finish at the Mercer County 1A boys' golf sectional.

Alleman's 318 bested the other 11 teams at the meet.

Peoria Christian and Monmouth-Roseville each shot 346 as a team and tied for second. But it is Peoria Christian that earns the trip to state.

They were followed by Illinois Valley Central, 347; West Central, 348; Fulton, 349; Princeton, 351; Putnam County, 354; Lena Winslow, 357; Ridgewood and Forreston, 358 and Dakota, 381.

Callas's 72 was four shots better than his nearest competitor Kyle Workman of Fulton.

The only local golfer to advance to state was Jake Gavin of United. Gavin shot a 79. Other golfers qualifying for state were: Alex Ott, Williamsfield, 77; Connor Gillen, Monmouth-Roseville, 78; Taylor Smith, West Central, 79; Jared Johnson, Illinois Valley Central, 80; Gage DeCook, 80; Eric Obert, Orangeville, 80 and Tanner Brown, Rock Falls, 80.

Other area golfers scores were: Alex Gavin, United, 83; Tyler Shull, Mercer County, 90 and Travis Leatherman, Sherrard, 98.
