Mayor succession to be determined Monday
Aledo Mayor Jack Doherty’s untimely death on Nov. 7, 2009 has not brought the city to a standstill, but the mayor’s position is up for grabs, according to City Administrator Janice Green.
“I talked to our city attorney a couple of times this week,” said Green. “At Monday’s Nov. 16, meeting, the aldermen will pick one of the aldermen to be the acting mayor until the next formal election,” she said.
Doherty began serving his four-year term as Aledo’s mayor in May 2009.
The next formal election is in April 2011, when Aledo citizens will vote for a mayor to fill the last two years of Doherty’s term.
Green said she has not discussed the matter with any of the current aldermen. “It’s up to them to pick someone for the title of ‘acting mayor.’ That will be an agenda item for Monday night.”
