Mercer County's Tanner Benson picks up a rebound against Rock Island Alleman at the first round of 2A Regionals.

The Alleman Pioneers advanced in the Sherrard Regional by defeating Mercer County, 51-40 last night.

Mercer County hung with Alleman for three quarters but the fourth quarter proved to be the difference.

Neither team led by more than four points throughout the first three quarters.

"In the end they just wore us out," said Mercer County head coach Brian Hutton.

Alleman led 31-29 heading into the final period. The Pioneers turned it up a notch that quarter -- They went on a 12-0 run to start the period and never trailed after that.

Late in the game Mercer County went on a 6-0 run and cut the Alleman lead to 47-40 with a little more than a minute left in the contest. But Alleman hit four free throws in the final minute to put the game away.
