Benjamin L. Sproston

Benjamin L. Sproston, 84, of Aledo, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at the Mercer County Nursing Home in Aledo. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo. Burial was in the Aledo Cemetery where graveside military services were conducted by the Mercer County VFW Post 1571. Visitation was from noon until time of service at Fippingers where memorials may be left to the Aledo First Baptist Church or the Mercer County VFW Post #1571. He was born March 2, 1926 in Millersburg, a son of John and Ella Newswander Sproston. He attended the Reynolds schools and married Ruth Litwiler on Nov. 15, 1946 in Hopkinsville, Ky. She died in 1975. He married Shirley Dellitt Anderson on May 29, 1976 in Aledo.

He was a US Army Veteran of WW II and was employed at John Deere Harvester retiring in 1983. His memberships include the Aledo First Baptist Church and the Mercer County VFW Post #1571.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, four children, Sharon Lingafelter, Steve Sproston, Tracy Rice, all of Aledo and Terry Sproston of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight step-children, Sandra Peterson of East Moline, Sharon Moore of Aledo; Janice Rosene of New Windsor; Peggy Schlecht of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Lynda Castor of Aledo. Penny Clayton of Viola; Michael Anderson of Leeseville, La. and Joseph Anderson of Surprise, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, brother John Sproston of Aledo and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, wife, two sons, Stanley and Ben Jr,, one brother, Ray Sproston and two sisters, Gertrude Tapscott and Doris Robinson preceded him in death.
