Milan Optimists Invite the Public to Youth Safety Day April 9
The Milan Optimists and Rock Island County 4-H are offering a free Youth Safety Day on Saturday, April 9 from 9 am – Noon at the University of Illinois Extension, 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan. IL. There will be over 400 free youth bicycle helmets distributed. Children and families are invited to the free event where they will have the chance to learn about bicycle safety, pet safety, fire safety, food safety, do some make and take activities and enter their name for a chance to win one of four children’s bicycles.
The Quad City Bicycle Club invites attendees to try their safety course and stations with the help of volunteers from Ride with Kelly. Youth will learn bicycle safety just in time for the warm weather and increased riding. All youth who attend can register to win one of four free youth bicycles to be given away at the end of the event. They are provided by the Milan Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 219. The bikes will be used for the course in the morning. Youth can also bring their own bicycle to ride in the course. For an extra chance to win one of the bicycles, anyone who brings a donation of a canned good for the food pantry or a new pair of socks for the 4-H Socks for Senior Citizens giveaway will get to put their name in the drawing an extra time.
The Quad City Animal Welfare Center will present pet safety throughout the morning. The Blackhawk Fire Department will have their fire safety house open for tours to teach visitors about fire safety and prevention. University of Illinois Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Program staff will teach food safety and provide healthy snack recipes and tasting samples. The Milan Optimists Club will be serving free hot dogs, juice and popcorn. Rock Island County 4-H will have free make and take craft station and the Rock Island County Master Gardeners will provide a free flower plant for the first 100 youth.
