The village of Alexis will not become a home rule municipality.

Citizens voted 166-28 against a referendum to make Alexis home rule. In Warren County the vote was 93-12 against home rule. The measure fared little better in Mercer County, falling 73-16

The village board wanted to become home rule for more flexibility when it comes to finances.

"I think their thought is the home rule would give them more avenues to raise revenue, other than just relying on real estate taxes," Village Attorney Ron Stombaugh said.

All municipalities in Illinois with populations above 25,000 are automatically considered home rule. For any city or village under that number, becoming home rule requires a referendum. As of Feb. 24, Illinois had 205 municipalities with home rule, including Galesburg and Monmouth.
