A plaque commemorating Joel Brunsvold's contributions to the Sherrard School district was dedicated Thursday, April 21, 2011, at the Sherrard sports complex. Speakers included Pat Verschoore and Denny Jacobs, who both worked with Brunsvold in the legislature.

Brunsvold had some deep Sherrard roots, as a former teacher and coach for the district.

Former Illinois Senator Denny Jacobs talked about his closeness to Joel. "We were mayors together, we were in the legislature together and we were lobbyists together," said Jacobs.

He talked about how much Joel loved Sherrard. "He was teaching science here. He loved Sherrard, he loved teaching, he loved his family and he loved kids," said Jacobs.

Also speaking was Joel's brother Brian. "I knew him longer than any of you," he told the audience. "He loved kids. He loved sports. He loved all sports," said Brian.

The Sherrard Sports Complex was kept busy on Thursday with a girls' softball game, boys' baseball game and track meet on the all weather track.

Larry Stone, longtime member of the Sherrard Board of Education and a Joel Brunsvold friend, talked about how the Sherrard Booster Club had raised $70,000 toward the sports complex "and then Joel's infusion came."
