The Erika Kate Foundation has become dear to the hearts of this year's Mercer County volleyball team.  During the Sept. 21, 2011 match against ROWVA High School Mercer County volleyball girls are sponsoring a fund-raiser for the foundation at the high school. The freshman/sophomore game starts at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game.

Caring for Hearts T-shirts are being sold for the event. The purpose of this event is to raise money for the Erika Kate Foundation. The mission of the Erika Kate Foundation is to help ease the emotional, spiritual and financial burdens borne by parents of children with life-threatening heart disease. The vision is to provide short-term assistance to families in the midst of medical crisis, working with social workers in pediatric heart centers nationwide to bridge the gap for those whose short-term needs exceed available resources.

Who was Erika Kate?

Erika Kate Maynard was a spunky, joy-filled little girl who died at the age of four from complications of a heart transplant in 2006. She loved the colors pink and purple, goldfish crackers, swinging, the band U2 and flip flops. Erika’s favorite phrase was “I LOVE YOU MOOOORE!”  Erika Kate’s parents, Rich and Traci Maynard, are both alumni of Aledo High School.

Before and during the volleyball matches, there will be raffles of donated items from local businesses, “souvenirs” thrown into the stands by the Volleyball Players, a 50/50 Raffle, and a Silent Auction, which will include a volleyball signed by the Mercer County High School Volleyball Teams, as well as lots of other fun items!

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.
