Gary Ruggles (left) donated and painted this 1950s era mail delivery system for area residents to deposit American Flags that need to be destroyed. Jay Doherty an American Legions member says the deposits can be made anytime of the day or night at this depository at the American Legion building off Illinois Hwy 17 just east of Aledo. The patriotic depository will be installed there after July 4 celebrations.

A flag depository will be unveiled during fourth of July festivities in Aledo Central Park on July 4 between the Mercer County Community Band and Mercer County Community Choir performances. Concerts start at noon in the Aledo Band Shell.

Respect for the American flag will be made easier for area residents, thanks to donations from a few community members. Gary Ruggles of Aledo donated an old mail deposit box and painted it in red, white and blue. Paint was donated by Ron Schmidt of Aledo. Amanda Soseman donated her decal skills, both creating and applying the box's finishing touches.

The flag deposit box will be placed at the Aledo American Legion Post, 2000 Ill. Route 17.

On  the morning of July 4, the 20th annual Dr. Ford Frog Races will be held in Aledo Central Park, which usually brings in more than 100 participants. Frog registration is at 9 a.m. with races starting at 10 a.m.

The evening will be topped off with fireworks display from the Mercer County fairgrounds. The Aledo Fire Department is in charge of the program.
