The Mercer County Sheriff's Department honored three of its officers at the Mercer County Board meeting Tuesday night, Aug. 7. Chief Deputy Jeff Dale, Detective Dusty Terrill and Sgt. Jason Monson each received awards for Exceptional Merit from Mercer County Sheriff Tom Thompson.

According to Thompson the awards were given for the officer's actions on July 5. The department was asked to check the welfare at a residence in northeast Aledo where there had been some domestic incidents in the past. They attempted to enter the home in an attempt to find out if anyone was inside despite the odor of gasoline permeating the structure. Sgt. Monson was able to enter the home through the basement for a short time before having to leave. Shortly afterward an explosion blew the basement door 40-50 feet from the residence. Later it was determined that the two victims were deceased before the officers had arrived.

The officers received a standing ovation from the board and many of the people present at the meeting.
