Verschoore Encourages Veterans to Utilize the Military Tax Assistance Program

State Rep. Pat Verschoore (D-Milan) is calling attention to a useful constituent service helping recently-deployed military members and their families file state and federal income tax returns.

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to the brave men and women of the U.S. military, and this program is a way to give back,” Verschoore said. “With tax season around the corner this program helps military personnel with free tax assistance and guidance to ease the anxiety of this stressful time of year.”

CPAs for the Public Interest, a community service organization run by the Illinois CPA Society, will match military personal or their family members with CPA volunteers in their area who will provide free tax preparation assistance. Volunteers will help qualified persons take full advantage of tax benefits, exclusions, and filling and payment extensions available to them. Spouses and family members can request assistance for military personnel still overseas. Illinois residents who are current service members, and have served in a combat zone or qualified hazardous duty area are eligible.

“I want to thank the Illinois CPA society and the CPAs for Public Interest for their commitment to assist our veterans,” Verschoore added. “This is a great service that is offered at no cost to our military families. I strongly encourage anyone eligible to look into this program.”

Eligible military members and their families should register online at, or contact Jill Loeser at (800) 572-9870. For more information, please contact Verschoore’s office at (309) 558-3612.
