Mercer County Scholastic Bowl team wins Masonic tourney

The Mercer County Scholastic Bowl team won six straight matches and placed first in the Masonic Sectional Tournament held Saturday, Feb. 16 at Rockridge. (This is not the IHSA state series. The Masons have their own tournament.)

The championship match was very close with Mercer County having a 45 point lead with four questions remaining. Knoxville answered two questions in a row to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 15 points with two questions remaining.

Adam Lloyd came up big answering the next to last question correctly to seal the victory for Mercer County.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Springfield High School Saturday, March 2 to compete in the Masonic State Championship along with 17 other Class A sectional qualifiers.

The Golden Eagles won their pool going 4-0 to advance to the medal rounds. They beat Alwood 290-165; Annawan 290-175; Rockridge 300-170 and Abingdon 305-170.

Mercer County beat Riverdale in the semi-finals 255-115 and Knoxville in the championship match 245-230.

The final placement for teams were: Mercer County, first; Knoxville, second; Riverdale, third; and Rockridge, fourth.
