Vikings ninth in NCAA Division III power rankings to close out indoor season
The Augustana Vikings finish off their indoor season ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III dual meet power ranking.
Coming off the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championship at which it took second, Augustana dropped one spot from last week’s ranking.
The Vikings closed the indoor year with a total of 152.72 points. The poll, which is conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, quantifies the depth of each team. The team’s total score is the sum of all points earned in each event. Two individual athletes are scored per event, as well as one relay team. The points are based on the best marks of an event in the current season, with the faster times and farther distances worth more.
What was not included in the most recent ranking was the stellar performances that took place at the NCAA Division III indoor national championship on March 8-9 in Naperville, Illinois. Augustana brought home four All-Americans in three events. Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) took second in the 400 meters, while Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took eighth in the same race to also achieve All-American honors. Rindone and Patton joined with David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), and Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) to take eighth in the 1,600 meter relay.
The rankings demonstrate the stiff competition that Augustana deals with as the Midwest Region hosts five of the top 10 teams. Wisconsin-La Crosse (173.48), Wisconsin-Oshkosh (165.04), and North Central (163.67) all round up the top three teams in the country. Wisconsin-Eau Claire (159.83) ranks fifth, while Augustana is ninth.
Augustana started the season with a team victory in the Sol Butler Invitational on January 12 in Dubuque, Iowa, scoring 187.5 points to win the five-team event. On Saturday, January 19 the Vikings competed in the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois and won seven events although there were no team scores. The Vikings tied for first in the Olivet Nazarene Invitational on Friday, January 25 in Kankakee, Illinois and were fifth at the Whitewater Invitational on Saturday, February 2 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. They won the Grinnell Invitational on Saturday, February 9 in Grinnell, Iowa and then took the Valentine’s Day Invitational at home on Thursday, February 14. They closed out their season with a second place finish at the CCIW indoor track & field championship.
Augustana will open its outdoor season with the Viking Olympics at home on March 22-23.
