Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) and Congressman Dave Loebsack (IA-02) urged the House Appropriations Committee to provide funding for the activation of Thomson Prison in their appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2014.

In a letter to the Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS), Congressman Frank Wolf of Virginia, and the Ranking Member, Congressman Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania, Bustos and Loebsack urged the inclusion of the Department of Justice’s budget proposal for $236.2 million to provide for the activations of new prisons, including Thomson prison.

Earlier this month, Bustos called on President Obama to include funding for the activation of Thomson prison in his FY 2014 budget proposal. Last week, President Obama’s released his budget proposal, which did include funding to begin the activation of Thomson prison and two other prisons.

In addition to today’s letter, Bustos has also requested a meeting with Chairman Wolf to press for funding for Thomson prison in-person.

The opening of Thomson prison would not only alleviate national prison overcrowding, but it would also add 1,100 local jobs to the region.
