Education Camp in Andover is Aug. 8 and 9
The first ever Andover Education Camp for Kids ages 10-12 will be held Thursday and Friday, August 8 and 9. The Swedish Council of America and the Jenny Lind Chapel are sponsoring this camp, which will run from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. both days at various sites in Andover. Since enrollment is limited to 15 students, registration will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
The cost for the camp is $25, which includes noon meals, supplies, all activities, and a copy of the new book, "Swedish Immigrants Find the American Dream in Andover, Illinois." Nancy Frakes, Ph.D, the author of this book, will be the camp director. In addition to telling about the life of the immigrants who came to this area from Sweden, the book contains trivia, geography, language arts, math and science on the subject. The children will have fun and learn at the same time such things as: what do mills and the underground railroad have to do with Andover, who are Jenny Lind and Lars Paul Esbjörn, why did Jenny Lind donate money to help build the Jenny Lind Chapel, how did the immigrants survive in this area (including hands-on
demonstrations), and why and where was Augustana College started.
