Sandburg To Offer Biofuels Manufacturing Technology Program

GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College will offer a new biofuels manufacturing technology program starting with the 2013 fall semester.

The two-year Associate in Applied Science program is funded by the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) and is intended for persons who desire to become professional technicians qualified for employment in the renewable energy and/or manufacturing sectors. The program will prepare graduates for employment as operators or technicians in the field of biodiesel production; wet and dry ethanol production; waste and water treatment; process control; and chemical processing.

“Biofuels is a very broad base for people who are interested in math, science and agriculture,” said Lauri White, dean of career, technical and health education. “Students will learn how to process different feedstocks. In this case, we’re going to produce ethanol.”

The program allows students to complete their coursework online while attending Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg for laboratory exercises with state-of-the-art equipment. Sandburg received a $680,000 grant from IGEN in 2011 as part of a network of green programs in 17 colleges statewide.

“It gives us some recruitment opportunities to reach out to people across the state because we’re the only ones that are offering this type of program with this delivery method,” White said. “It’s beneficial to Sandburg because we purchased a little over $100,000 worth of new equipment in biofuel simulators, ethanol production simulators and pH simulators so that the students will actually have control panels like they will see out in the workforce.”

The biofuels industry is experiencing rapid growth. The industry currently employs more than 11,000 workers, with an additional 3,700 workers needed over the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
