Bustos urges eligible Illinoisans to use free online tax preparation and filing

Today, with the tax filing deadline a little more than two months away, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) encouraged eligible Illinoisans to use a free tax preparation and filing service available through the IRS Free File program. Since its inception in 2003, the IRS Free File program has offered eligible taxpayers free access to tax preparation, completion and filing services and has saved taxpayers an estimated $1.2 billion in filing costs. To be eligible, a taxpayer must have a 2013 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less.

“I encourage Illinoisans across our region to take advantage of this useful service that will save them time and money,” said Congresswoman Cheri Bustos. “Not only will this service make filing easy, but it will allow you to set up a direct deposit so you can get your refund in a timely fashion.”

To file tax returns for free, eligible taxpayers should visit the IRS Free File website at www.IRS.gov/freefile and follow the simple instructions.
