The Augustana College Center for Speech, Language, and Hearing recently was selected to receive funding from the Royal Ball Run organization to offer scholarships for speech-language services in the summer.

The Royal Ball Run is an important fundraiser for autism initiatives and programs in the Quad-Cities area. The run will be held on Saturday, June 21, in Milan.

Several family and child-friendly offerings will include the “walk of heroes and highnesses” to showcase families affected by autism, and the Royal Ball for All, an inclusive event for all children on Friday, June 20.

Inspiration for the Royal Ball Run and Royal Ball for All comes from the one in 68 children diagnosed with autism each year.

Last year, the Augustana College Center for Speech, Language, and Hearing received $10,000 from the Royal Ball Run to support the implementation of an intensive eight-week “More than Words” course for parents of young children on the autism spectrum. In this course, parents connected with other families and learned how to improve their child’s speech and language development at home.

Funds also supported speech-language intervention scholarships for children on the autism spectrum.

This year, the Center for Speech, Language, and Hearing is offering scholarships to help defray the cost of summer speech-language services, as many children with autism spectrum disorder experience skill regression over the summer break.

“Very few families have insurance coverage for speech-language services, even though communication deficits are one of the hallmark characteristics of autism spectrum disorder,” said Allison Haskill, director of the Center for Speech, Language, and Hearing. “Royal Ball Run scholarships will allow families access to summer services they may not otherwise be able to afford.”

In most years, 50-60% of the center’s summer caseload includes children on the autism spectrum. The center offers a variety of programs ranging from 1:1 intervention to language intensive pre-school, school-age, adolescent and young adult social groups.
