Augustana Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Librarian/Archivist Lisa Huntsha will travel to Sweden this summer to research the use of digital resources in Swedish libraries and archives.

Her two-week trip is funded through the institute’s Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund. The fund provides opportunities for those in a position to influence public opinion and contribute to the development of their society.

Her project, “Exploring the Future of Access, Discoverability, and Digital Initiatives in the Modern Library/Archives Profession: a Tour and Study of Swedish Libraries, Archives, and Heritage Organizations,” will explore how Swedish organizations have succeeded with new and innovative digital projects. Huntsha will be traveling by train, visiting and talking with professionals all across the country and bringing back inspiration to design new outreach initiatives at Augustana. The information she brings back also will benefit Augustana faculty looking for new primary-source learning opportunities for students.

“Today, libraries and archives are increasingly using digital means to provide greater access to their collections. This includes digitization projects, online finding aids, library catalogs, virtual exhibits and digital humanities projects, to name a few,” said Huntsha. “I am hoping to learn ways to engage new audiences with our materials as a result of this trip.”

Huntsha received her bachelor’s from Augustana College and her master’s from Syracuse University. She specializes in museum studies, archives and collection management. Huntsha has worked in special collections, museums and historical societies in Illinois, New York and Alaska. As the archivist for the Swenson Center, she conducts archival processing, provides research assistance and organizes exhibits and outreach efforts.

The Swenson Center at Augustana College is a national archives and research institute providing resources for the study of Swedish immigration to North America, the communities they established, and the role the immigrants and their descendants have played in American life.
