The sixth annual Freedom Walk will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6 at the American Legion, 515 W 1st Ave., Milan.

The 1 1/2 mile walk (approximately 3,000 steps) on the paved walkway along the Hennepin Canal honors the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks on U.S. soil on Sept. 11, 2001.

The walk is a public, family-oriented event open to men, women and children. Post members lead the walk, a meditative event to reflect on the sacrifices of those killed on 9/11. The walk is symbolic, and usually takes just over 30 minutes.

A light lunch will follow the walk. There is no charge for the lunch, but free-will donations to help defray the cost of the meal will be appreciated.

The Freedom Walk is one of the Milan Legion’s series of yearly community programs marking the sacrifices of civilians and military personnel. Other programs include ceremonies on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and a program honoring local survivors of the Dec.7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
