44th annual Joy of Christmas Service is Dec. 10
The 44th annual Joy of Christmas Past & Present will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m. Students and faculty from Augustana College join the community for this beautiful service of worship and music that starts in the sanctuary of Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover. The Christmas story will be read in several different languages.
The service concludes with everyone processing to nearby Jenny Lind Chapel, which is illuminated by 100 candles, and where Holy Communion will be celebrated to the strains of familiar Christmas carols. Refreshments will be served in Luther hall immediately after the service. This special worship event celebrates the historic links between the two Augustanas for 154 years. The Augustana Lutheran congregation was organized in 1850, and Augustana College was founded in 1860, both by the Rev. Lars Paul Esbjörn.
The Jenny Lind Chapel was built in the early 1850's, and is the Mother Church" of the former Augustana Lutheran Church in America, and founding site of the Norwegian-Danish Church in America in 1870. It is named after the 19th century opera singer, Jenny Lind, who donated $1,500 toward the construction of the church. Because of numerous setbacks and struggles, including a cholera epidemic, the building was not completed until 1854.
