The newly formed Mercer County Board elected Dr. Brian Anseeuw as its new chairman at its Monday, Dec. 1 meeting.

"It's an honor to get elected," said Anseeuw after the board meeting. He believed he was the first Republican chair in at least the past 25 years.

Anseeuw claimed the mountain of debt the county is under is ruining it and warned that it won't be fixed overnight but that he hoped to see some changes soon.

One of Anseeuw's first actions as chairman was to call an emergency board meeting for Thursday, Dec. 4. Anseeuw said the city administrator of Princeton would be on hand to discuss the possibility of Mercer County hiring someone for that position.

Anseeuw was elected board chair by a 7-0 vote with all seven Republicans on the board voting for the appointment and all three Democrats voting against it.

New board member Karen Jones also nominated fellow new board member Joe Vann to fill the position as chair but he declined. Vann was named the vice chair.
