GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteers for tutoring. Training sessions will take place from 1-5 p.m. Jan. 18, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 in Room 103 of George Davis Hall on the campus of Knox College.

Once trained, volunteers can tutor students one-on-one, in small groups or in classrooms and assist with specific projects and events. Training is free of charge, and books and materials for tutoring are provided at no cost. Those who cannot attend the entire training may complete it at other sessions throughout the year.

The needs of students range from lack of reading skills to more specific needs such as passing the GED or job-related tests. Basic math and English as a second language tutors also are needed.

Volunteer involvement is arranged to meet at the volunteer’s availability and typically requires meeting once a week for about an hour. Tutoring sites are public and include libraries, churches and schools. There is no charge for training. Books and materials for tutoring are provided at no charge.

After attending the training sessions and participating in four hours of observation/tutoring, volunteers will have completed the 16 hours of literacy tutor training required by the state of Illinois Literacy Office and earn one continuing education credit from Carl Sandburg College. This training is transferrable to literacy programs worldwide and is an excellent addition to resumes and job and school applications.

The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide and is supported by funds received from the Illinois Secretary of State, the Illinois Community College Board, the United Way of Knox County and donations from individuals and local organizations.
