County attempting to recover Bertelsen's salary

Mercer County State's Attorney Greg McHugh, on behalf of Mercer County filed a "Complaint For Recovery of Salary" in Mercer County Circuit Court April 20.

McHugh and the county are attempting to recover money paid as salary to former Mercer County Treasurer Mike Bertelsen.

Bertelsen was elected Treasurer of Mercer County in December of 2012. On Aug. 6 of 2013 he was placed on paid administrative leave after being charged without he felony theft of governmental property. Bertelsen was removed from office after his criminal conviction in Mercer County on Oct. 20, 2014.

The statue allows recovery of compensation paid to a governmental employee during administrative leave during a pending criminal investigation resulting in a criminal conviction.

During the period he was barred from office on Aug. 6, 2013 and his conviction, he received 27 paychecks from the county totaling $50,767.47.

McHugh and the county is asking for that amount, $50,767.47 plus any other relieve necessary to compensate the county.
