Rockridge Music Department wins IHSA state sweepstakes championship

EDGINGTON, IL – The Rockridge High School Music Department has earned the IHSA Class B Music Sweepstakes Championship for 2015.  The Music Sweepstakes competition is a combination of scores from the Solo & Ensemble Contest and the Organizational Contest.

Rockridge hosted and participated in the IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest on March 7, 2015.  Band students earned 303 points with their performances and were ranked as the second place band in the state.  At that same contest, the choir earned 246 points and also earned a second place choir in the state.  Both groups were awarded with IHSA State plaques.  Students playing piano and strings earned an additional 33 points at that contest for RHS.

Six individuals were selected by their judges as the best performance of the day.  The three vocalists selected included Audrey Fratzke, Tyler Palmer, and Luke Vermeire.  Three instrumentalists selected were Erin Ahlgrim on the Alto Saxophone, David Eddy on the French Horn, and Carly Walker on the Oboe.

On Friday, April 17th the music department traveled to Abingdon-Avon High School for the IHSA Organizational Contest.  Rockridge took a Concert Band, Jazz Band, Mixed Choir, Treble Choir, Bass Choir, Show Choir, and Jazz Choir.  With their performances and ratings at the Organizational Contest, 225 more points were added to the sweepstakes totals.  Rockridge earned a total of 807 points to earn the Class B Sweepstakes Championship for the first time in school history after finishing in third place last year.  The band is directed by Mrs. Jessica Zabransky and the choir is directed by Mr. Curtis Fischer-Oelschlaeger.

Rockridge High School will hold a public recognition of the Music Department’s achievement on Thursday, May 14th at 11:30 am in the RHS South Gym.  This assembly will recognize and honor the success of the music students & directors and will feature performances by selected individuals & groups.
