Things threatened to boil over during the Aug. 10 Sherrard Village Board meeting. Doug Johnson, husband of former Village Clerk Theresa Johnson, demanded answers from Mayor Delbert Henry.

When asked for comment following the meeting, Theresa Johnson explained why she abruptly resigned.

She said that on July 15,  “He (Mayor Henry) came in screaming at me …  and cussed me out. Every other word was the F word. He denies it, of course there was nobody else in there when he did it.”

Johnson served as village clerk just short of five years.

Addressing the mayor at the meeting Doug Johnson said, “I want to know why you think it’s proper to talk to my wife like you did. Using the ‘F bomb’ on her.”

He was interrupted by Henry who said, “That didn’t happen. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t sit there and lie, you can just go ahead and swear at anybody you want?,” Johnson said.

“I’m saying I didn’t do it,” the mayor responded.

Trustee Shawn Wyant said, “I think Delbert already apologized to her …  about things.”

Still not satisfied, Doug Johnson said, “If you’re man enough, stand up to it.”

Henry said he had already apologized in a public board meeting.

Doug Johnson described the apology, as “Oh no it was, ‘if I did say that, I guess I apologize.’ Delbert don’t sit there and lie. This village has heard too many of your lies, it’s time for you to grow up.”

Henry said, “We’re not going to do this,” and moved on with the meeting. Doug Johnson walked out, his disgust visible.
