Dollar General coming to Viola
A new business is coming to Viola. Construction is under way on a Dollar General store, which will be on U.S. 67, almost directly across the street from Casey's.
Viola Mayor Kirk Doonan said the company has been eying the village for some time.
"They've been looking for a site for quite some time," Doonan said. "They were looking at several different sites in town, but none of (the other ones) were large enough."
The mayor said he hopes the new store helps keep more shopping dollars in town. He understands, however, it could affect some locally owned businesses.
"It's kind of a mixed bag," Doonan said. "There's a lot of positives to it. It might hurt the grocery store a little bit. They're (Morrison's) hoping they can diversify a little bit and keep going strong."
The Dollar General will be 9,100 square feet. The mayor was unsure how many people will be employed.
"They expect to be open by winter," he said, "before the snow flies."
Meanwhile, the village continues to acquire downtown buildings in hopes of revitalizing that area.
"We're still working on getting someone interested in developing that," Doonan said.
