October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.

The first step is to contact your doctor or local health agency about a mammogram. The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP)

offers free mammograms, breast exams, pelvic exams and Pap tests to eligible women. There are no income guidelines for this program. You may be eligible for this program if (1) You are a woman. (2) You have no

medical insurance or your health insurance will not cover these services. (3) You are between 35 and 64 years

old. (Younger women with symptoms may also qualify.)
