The Mercer County Board and County Engineer Jimmy Samaniego on Tuesday, Oct. 13, agreed to what is termed a mutual separation agreement. The agreement was effective Oct. 13.

The County Board voted on the agreement, with no further comment, after a brief executive session. Samaniego was not at the meeting.

"We accepted his resignation," board member Jeff McWhorter said after the meeting.

Highway Department employee Matthew Lower was named interim engineer.

"He can serve as interim for 100 days," McWhorter said.

He said the Transportation Committee will be exploring its options.

"They're talking about possibly sharing an engineer with other counties," McWhorter said.

Lower will also be the Animal Control administrator. McWhorter said the county veterinarian used to serve as the administrator. The head of the Animal Control Committee, Joe Vann, has been filling that position.

In other business, a number of appointments were approved: Jayne Fitzsimmons, IMRF agent; 911 Board, Jeff Hill, Joy Fire Department, Rita Retherford, EMT; Mercer County Housing Authority, Rex Johnson and Robert Hoffman, three-year terms, Nancy Livingston and Vivian Brown, each five years; and Mike Frieden, a three-year term on the Bay Island Drainage District board.
