Old boiler to be replaced during Phase II HVAC work at Mercer County High School.

The Mercer County District 404 Board of Education Wednesday (Oct. 14) approved seeking bids for Phase II of the HVAC project at the high school. The old boiler will be removed _ by May 1 or sooner _ with the project expected to be done by August 2016.

Asbestos abatement work could begin in April.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Jane Eichman said the estimated cost of the work is $1.1 million, which would be paid for with a three-year loan. Phase I of the work was completed this past summer.

"The loan would be paid for out of our sales tax money," board member Bill Smock said.

Eichman noted there has been talk of including a chiller system, which would allow the high school to be air conditioned. Such a system would add approximately $300,000 to the cost, she said, and would probably require a loan of 4 1/2 years.

"Can we have an alternate bid to include the chiller?" asked board President Julie Wagner.

The board decided that was the way to go and approved seeking bids for the work, with an alternate bid for the chiller.
