Today, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) announced the appointment of Congresswoman Cheri Bustos as a Senior Whip. Bustos, who is currently in her second term, will leverage her position to fight for policies that advance American manufacturing, ensure women’s economic security and grow our middle-class.

“Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is an outstanding advocate for working families, and I’m pleased that she’s agreed to take on this leadership position as a Senior Whip,” said Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer. “Since her first day in office, Cheri has been a strong supporter of our Make It In America plan to spur new American manufacturing and support job creation here at home. She knows that it takes more than just a good idea to get things done for working families in Congress, it takes determination and tenacity to get results. I know she’ll keep working on behalf of families in Illinois and across our country and help ensure that more workers and families can Make It In America.”

“Democratic Whip Hoyer has been a true mentor to me during my time serving the families of the 17th district and I’m honored to take on the challenge of serving as a Senior Whip,” said Congresswoman Cheri Bustos. “Whether it’s passing common sense policies to generate new American manufacturing, providing our workers with the skills they need to compete for 21st century jobs or rebuilding our roads and bridges, we need to work together to ensure that working families can Make It In America.”

The Senior Whip team is composed of leaders from across the Democratic Caucus.  They meet once a week, when Congress is in session.  During these meetings, the Senior Whips have a forward-looking, strategic discussion on the key issues facing our nation.  Senior Whips are also responsible for talking to their fellow Democratic members about upcoming legislation that will be considered in the House.
