Today (Monday, Nov. 23) is the first day of the filing period for the March 15, 2016, primary. The deadline for candidates to file nominating petitions is Nov. 30.

One race of particular interest in March will be the three-way contest for the GOP nomination to fill the 74th District House seat being vacated by long-time state Rep. Donald Moffitt, Gilson, who is retiring at the end of this term.

Knox County Republican Party Chairman Wayne Saline, Dan Swanson of Alpha and Mike DeSutter of Woodhull have all thrown their hats into the ring. The winner of the primary will face the Democratic nominee. As of now, Galesburg attorney Bill Butts is the lone person to announce his candidacy.

County races up for election next year include circuit clerk, state's attorney, and coroner, as well as one candidate from each of the five Mercer County Board districts.
