Eagles, Tigers open boys' basketball season with losses
The Mercer County Golden Eagles and the Sherrard Tigers both went down to defeat Monday, Nov. 23, as the boys' basketball season opened. Both MCHS and Sherrard are taking part in the Orion Tip-Off Classic.
Sherrard gave Alleman all it could handle in the first half. If fact, the Tigers led at halftime, 33-30. It was all Alleman in the second half, however. The Pioneers outscored Sherrard in the third quarter, 23-7, and were never headed on their way to a 79-50 victory.
Lampo led Sherrard with 15 points, while Mihm had 15 for Alleman.
Mercer County's game with Orion somewhat followed the same script. The Eagles led 12-11 after the first stanza and were only down 28-24 at the half. Orion outscored MCHS in the third quarter, 19-6, and sped to a 68-48 win.
Spencer Wood led Mercer County with 20 points.
In the other game of the evening, Princeton downed Erie, 52-40.
Mercer County and Sherrard meet today (Tuesday, Nov. 24) in the second day of the tourney. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
