Matt Sorensen of Bellwether LLC, the company that is Mercer County's consultative administrator, has been named in a federal court indictment, according to The Pantagraph of Bloomington. According to the newspaper, the indictment accuses him of being part of a scheme to defraud State Farm of more thatn $400,000 in unearned consulting fees.

The indictment was filed Monday in federal court in Chicago. Sorensen is the chairman of the McClean County Board. He is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 11 in federal court in Chicago.

Bellwether LLC was hired in October by the Mercer County Board to be its consultative administrator.  The firm was hired by the board this past spring to conduct an operations audit. Bellwether has supplied the county with help in budget preparation and also an analysis of jail operations.

Bellwether's contract with the county was extended through the end of 2016 in October. The indictments in no way relate to business done by the company with Mercer County.

"The indictment has nothing to do with Bellwether," new County Board Chairman Joe Vann told the Times Record on Tuesday (Jan. 5). "They have been very helpful to us and it (hiring the firm) much less expensive than hiring an administrator."
