The Manure Pit Safety/Rescue training sponsored by the Mercer County Farm Bureau's Women's Committee July 30 has been selected as a County Activity of Excellence by the American Farm Bureau Federation, according to the county Farm Bureau website.

The project will be showcased at the American Farm Bureau Annual Convention in Orlando, Fla. The convention is Jan. 9-12.

The training was conducted July 30 at the Mercer County Fairgrounds. About 20 area farmers attended the afternoon session, with area volunteer firefighters taking in the evening training.

Brad Kruse of the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) conducted the sessions here.

"At the end of the day, this is a very serious thing," Kruse said then. "It's a life or death issue."
