Zunkel to be head football coach at McHenry

Mercer County head football coach and athletic director Nat Zunkel is headed to northeast Illinois. The McHenry District 156 Board of Education on Tuesday (Jan. 19) approved hiring Zunkel.

Asked if he will also be athletic director there, Zunkel said, "head coach, as of now. We are working everything else out."

McHenry High School, located in the northern Chicago suburb of McHenry, is an 8A football program. The Warriors compete in the Fox Valley Conference.

The 8A classification is the largest of Illinois football classes.

McHenry High School has an east and west  campus. There are about 2,500 students in District 156. The high school plays in the six-team Valley Division of the Fox Valley Conference. There is also a seven-team Fox Division.

Zunkel said he was approached by the school.

"It's just a huge opportunity for my family and me," he said. "I'm happy for the opportunity. I'm sad to leave the kids and the community."

Zunkel also talked about the excellence of his coaching staff here at Mercer County. The team had a record of 65-16 during his seven years here. including a state championship in 2012. The Golden Eagles finished the 2015 season 5-5 with a late season rush that landed them in the 3A playoffs. They were defeated by Kankakee Bishop McNamara, 48-0, in the first round.
