The latest unemployment figures show the jobless rate up in Mercer County and all surrounding counties compared to a year ago.

Mercer and Rock Island counties have the highest unemployment rates of six area counties at 6.8 percent in December 2015. However, a number of other counties are in the same range, with Henry County at 6.7 percent and Knox at 6.6 percent, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Warren County's jobless rate is just 5.8 percent, but that is still up almost a full percentage point from 5.0 percent in December 2014. Mercer County's December 2014 unemployment rate was 6.6 percent.
