Spencer Wood to play football at Augustana

Spencer Wood, a two-sport standout from Mercer County High School has announced that he’ll be continuing his education and athletic career at Augustana. He will enroll in the fall and become a member of Coach Steve Bell’s Viking football program.

 A 6-foot 3-inch, 210-pound quarterback, Wood twice earned All-Lincoln Trail Conference andDispatch/Argus Area All-Star recognition. He lettered four times for Coach Nat Zunkel’s Golden Eagles and guided them to a 23-10 record and three IHSA playoff appearances in his three seasons as a starter. As a junior, he earned All-State honorable mention from the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

 As a senior Wood threw for 1,141 yards and accounted for 11 touchdowns. He finished his career with 4,160 passing yards and a total of 51 passing and rushing touchdowns.

 Wood was also a four-year letter winner in Coach Brian Hutton’s Mercer County basketball program, finishing his career with 1,104 points. He averaged 17 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior, earning All-Lincoln Trail recognition for the third time and all-area honors from theDispatch/Argus andQuad-City Times for the second time.

 Spencer is the son of Mike and Laurie Wood of Aledo. He was a four-year honor roll student at Mercer County and a member of both the National Honor Society and Society for Academic Achievement. He is planning on a major in business administration or communication studies at Augustana.

 Wood joins a Viking program with an outstanding tradition that includes four NCAA Division III national championships, 21 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin titles, 23 CCIW Players of the Year and 32 Academic All-America selections. Bell, who has compiled a 116-50 record in 16 years as a collegiate head coach, will be in his second season at Augustana in 2016.
