Eagles baseball team is flying high
The Mercer County Golden Eagles varsity baseball team is off to a great start.
The Eagles won a Lincoln Trail Conference game on April 8 against Annawan/Wethersfield. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and captured a 12-2 victory at Northside Park. An RBI single by Ashton Klingaman and a two-run home run by Conner Sharp in the first inning and a solo home run by Conner Jenkins, an RBI single by Jaden Dellitt, a groundout by Brandon Skovronski, a passed ball, and an error in the second inning supplied the early offense for the Eagles.
Cade Quick recorded the win with four strikeouts. In the second game of a doubleheader, the Eagles completed the sweep with 16-6 victory. Anthony Ruggles had a busy day at the plate, collecting three extra-base hits. Later, the Eagles scored on a solo home run by Lucas Mohror.
April 9 found the Eagles in another LTC double header, this time against the Cougars of ROWVA/Willamsfield. In the first game, Conner Sharp came up big at the dish and on the hill, leading the Eagles to a 4-3 win. The second game was another win for the Eagles, 15-4, as they jumped out to an early lead. An RBI single by Lucas Mohror and a two-run single by Anthony Ruggles during the second inning helped the Golden Eagles put some runs on the board early. Gio Lee recorded the win for the Eagles.
The week of April 11 found Mercer County playing each night of the week. On Monday, Farmington fell to Golden Eagles 7-0. Jacob Dellitt had two extra-base hits, doubling in the fourth and fifth innings. Jeff Garrett made his first varsity start. He kept Farmington off the board during his 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out eight and walked two. The Eagles got two-run boosts when they scored on an RBI by Jaden Dellitt, scoring Jacob Jenkins.
Mercer beat United on Tuesday , April 12, 16-2. The Eagles put up seven runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Jaden Dellitt, an RBI single by Gio Lee, a two-run double by Lucas Mohror, a sacrifice fly by Kaedin Harmon and an RB single by Jacob Dellitt. Cade Quick recorded the win as he struck out 8 and walked one. The Golden Eagles went up for good in the first, scoring two runs on a two-run home run by Brandon Skovronski.
Alleman visited Northside on Wednesday, April 13, and the Eagles were up to the challenge, outlasting the Pioneers 6-4 after five lead changes. The Eagles managed to grab the lead after a strong sixth inning. They scored on a two-run triple by Lucas Mohror. Gio Lee recorded the win for the Eagles.
A large crowd watched the Eagles at Northside on Thursday, April 14, on Erika Kate Night. The home team routed United, 12-1, in five innings. The Eagles scored five runs in the fifth on a fielder's choice, a bases loaded walk, and a two-run single by Conner Sharp. Sharp kept contact to a minimum, striking out nine batters and walking one. The game was never in doubt after the first, as the Golden Eagles scored two runs in a groundout by Gio Lee.
The Golden Eagles play at Northside on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22 at 4:30. Come on out and catch a great ballgame!
