ALEDO -- A first time fundraiser for VFW Post 1571 raised nearly $6,000 according to post commander Andy Retherford. The post sponsored a memorial drive Saturday, Oct. 3, with seven area posts visited.

There were 27 cars registered, according to Retherford, with the drive starting in Aledo and posts were visited in New Boston, Keithsburg, Oquawka, Alexis, Galesburg, Alpha, New Windsor and then back to Aledo for a pork chop dinner.

“We also had a silent auction and raffles throughout the day that served to raise a lot of money,” he said. “We had a heck of a turnout -- really good community support,” Retherford added.

Funds raised will help support Aledo’s VFW, with a portion used to bring a traveling Vietnam War Memorial to Aledo during next year’s Rhubarb Festival.
