Baseball season is almost here!

As a transplanted Cleveland Indian fan, I am able to avoid the heated exchanges of Cub and Cardinal fans among my parishioners.   And although I do have a few White Sox fans to contend with, I find I am alone in my team loyalty.  No fellow Cleveland Indian fans around here.

But I do share the experience of frustration and broken hopes of any Cub fan.  Granted, it has been “only” since 1948 that the Indians have won the World Series as compared to 1908 for the Cubs, but there has been plenty of frustration and disappointment for Cleveland fans, easily on par with anything Cub fans have experienced.  And both Indian and Cub fans are all too familiar with the phrase “Wait ‘til next year!”

It was a surprise that Cleveland contended into September last year.  This year I do not know what to expect.  Grady Sizemore, who was once a star player, was re-signed and promptly needed back surgery.  A starting pitcher was caught using a false identity in his native Dominican Republic and may not be allowed into the USA to play this year.   Who knows what other surprises there may be?

Nevertheless, I anticipate the beginning of a new season and following the old home team.  The Central Division in the American League appears to be fairly even talent wise.  Therefore I look forward to the possibility of the Indians contending again.  Go Tribe!
