Eliza-New Boston volunteer firefighters continue to pour water on this rural New Boston residence on the New Boston Bay.

An early morning fire brought out three fire departments to the New Boston Bay area today. A single 46-year-old man was transported by MedForce helicopter to Iowa City as a result of the fire.

New Boston-Eliza fire chief Mike DeFrieze said he received the call at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, at 904 42nd St., New Boston. The house was fully engulfed and both Keithsburg and Joy fire departments were called for assistance. The home had only the one resident, who was injured.

By 7:30 a.m. there was only smoke remaining as the building had been burned to the ground. An explosion was heard by neighbors shortly before the fire erupted. The Med Force helicopter arrived around 4:15 a.m., according to DeFrieze to take the injured man to Iowa City.

The fire departments were assisted by the Mercer County Sheriff's department, New Boston Ambulance and AMT ambulance.

The Illinois Fire Marshall was called to the scene to investigate.
